The 2022 San Jose State University women's gymnastics team begins the season Sunday afternoon with a dual meet at the University of Denver beginning at 2 p.m. MT/1 p.m. PT.

The Spartans face the 10th-ranked Pioneers for the second time in three seasons. The two teams competed in one of the final meets of the 2020 season nationwide after the season was canceled due to COVID-19. Denver hosted a quad meet on March 8, 2020, with the Spartans, Pioneers, Washington and Alaska Anchorage. The Spartan highlight that day was the bars team that scored a 49.150.

Leaps & Flips

  • The Spartans return the entire team from 2021. Graduate student and UCLA transfer Mercedez Sanchez opted to come back for a sixth season, taking advantage of the extra year granted by the NCAA because of COVID. Sanchez competed on bars and beam for the Spartans last season.
  • Spartan gymnasts to watch this season include juniors Jada Mazury and Emma Milne and sophomore Lauren Macpherson. Mazury is slated to compete as an all-arounder this season after competing on bars, beam and floor the past two years.
  • Milne is the school record holder on beam, scoring a 9.925 on the apparatus in back-to-back meets in 2020.
  • Macpherson made an immediate impact her freshman season, competing as an all-arounder last season and scoring a season-best 39.025.
  • Senior Tia Gin will serve as a student assistant coach this season.
  • The Spartans added four newcomers for this season – Micheala Gentry, Trinity Johnson, Sophia Konieczny and Katherine Weyhmiller.
  • Sunday's meet will be homecoming for two gymnasts from the Denver area who will be making their debuts in a Spartan uniform. Konieczny is from Denver and trained at the Colorado Gymnastics Institute, while Weyhmiller is from Littleton and trained at Incline Gymnastics.

The Spartans will host three meets this season beginning with Sacramento State on Sunday, January 30, at 2 p.m., followed by Air Force on Friday, February 11, at 7 p.m., and UC Davis on Sunday, February 27, at 2 p.m. All meets will be held inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
