SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Spartan pairs Madeline Boerstra-Sarah Smevog and Haylee Nelson-Jaida Ward were winners Saturday as the San José State beach volleyball team played a pair of duals in San Luis Obispo. The Spartans fell to Washington 3-2, and No. 6 Loyola Marymount 5-0.
- The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead on Washington with Nelson and Ward winning 21-15, 21-4 to start the dual.
- Boerstra and Smevog tied the dual at 2-2 with a 21-14, 18-21, 15-11 win.
- The final point came down to the number-three pair that featured Spartans Amethyst Harper and Mia Schafer. The pair won the first set 21-18, fell 22-20 in the second set and lost the decisive set 15-9.
- Against sixth-ranked LMU, the Spartans were swept in all five matches.
San José State returns to Spartan Beach next weekend for duals on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The teams faces San Francisco (9 a.m.) and Saint Mary's (2 p.m.) on Friday, Oregon (9 a.m.) and Sacramento State (3 p.m.) on Saturday and Arizona (11 a.m.) on Sunday.
