SAN JOSE, Calif. - Former San José State football running back DeJon Packer has passed away at the young age of 24. Packer competed for the Spartans in the 2018 and '19 seasons, earning a scholarship and scoring the game-winning touchdowns against Arkansas in SJSU's first-ever win over a SEC opponent, and Fresno State in the regular-season finale. Packer was a rookie in the San Jose Police Department.
"We are devastated to learn of the passing of DeJon Packer," said Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. "He is a recent alum who seemingly had a bright future in the San Jose Police Department. Everyone I have spoken to expressed how well liked he was. We send our deepest condolences to the Packer family, the San Jose Police Department, and the entire SJSU community."
Statement from Brent Brennan, head football coach
"We all loved DeJon Packer and we will miss his infectious smile. He came to SJSU as a walk-on from San Jose City College and eventually earned a scholarship. He scored two of the most important touchdowns for our team during the 2019 football season at Arkansas and in our home win over Fresno State. He made a huge impact on our program on and off the field and I am still processing the fact that he is gone way too soon. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and our team is still in shock. We will miss you Pack!"
There are no further details about the cause of DeJon's death at this time.
