SAN JOSE, Calif.—Football player Andrew Jenkins received his third Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award, and six others received their second honor to lead a list of 12 San José State University student-athletes of color who were honored by Diverse Issues as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars in their respective sports.
The seven Spartans to receive multiple awards include Alexus Jackson, women's soccer; Andrew Jenkins, football; Tre Jenkins, football; Antonia Malate, women's golf; Sarah Smevog, volleyball; Vijay Srinivasan, men's golf; and Bailey Stubblefield, women's water polo.
Five student-athletes received the honor for the first time – Izzie Fraire, women's swimming & diving; Alii Matau, football; Sarah Santos, women's soccer; Kristopher Stiles, men's golf; and Malik Welch, football.
The award is named after the late tennis great Arthur Ashe, Jr. (1943-1993), an African-American men's Wimbledon and U.S. Open tennis champion who devoted much of his adult life to identifying and providing solutions to end discrimination in all facets of life. The awards program is in its 30th year.
Student-athletes of color who possess a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, are a sophomore standing or higher, contributing members to their team and are active in community activities are eligible to be nominated.
Over the past seven years, San José State student-athletes of color have received (141) Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards.
