SAN JOSE, Calif.—After recent successes within the San José State volleyball program, Trent Kersten and Delainey Gregory received promotions for their hard work and dedication to the Spartan student-athletes on and off the court.
Kersten received a five-year contract extension through the 2026 season at San José State. In his second season, Kersten guided the 2021 Spartans to one of its most successful seasons in 15 years. The team finished with a 19-10 overall record and 13-5 Mountain West mark. SJSU was the third seed at the 2021 MW Championship after recording 13 conference wins, the most for the program since joining the MW.
"Trent has done a great job creating a strong culture in our volleyball program that focuses on our vision of building champions in the classroom, in competition and in the community. We are coming off our most successful season in the Mountain West, and we look forward to Trent directing our program in the future to even newer heights," said San José State Director of Athletics Jeff Konya.
"I am excited to continue to be a part of Spartan Nation for years to come. I would like to thank Jeff Konya and all of our administration for their belief in our staff and student-athletes. I would also like to thank our volleyball staff that I get to work with on a daily basis. We would not have had nearly as special of a season this past fall without their commitment to excellence. Lastly, and most importantly, thank you to the student-athletes that I get to work with. They continue to inspire me with their commitment to our program and it makes me grateful to have a role in each of their journeys," said Kersten.
Gregory was promoted to the Associate Head Coach of the beach program and continues as an assistant coach for the indoor team. Gregory has been a key leader for the Spartan beach volleyball program since the 2020 season. That year, as interim coach, the team started the year with a 9-2 record with wins over Oregon and Stephen F. Austin before the season was canceled due to COVID-19. This past season, San José State finished with a 12-12 record, only the third time in school history that the beach program finished with a .500 or better record.
"As we evaluated Beach Volleyball and Indoor Volleyball, we felt it was important to promote Delainey to the lead role for Beach with her strong skill set and success. She did a great job this year, and we are excited that she will continue to help both our programs grow at San José State," stated Konya.
"I would like to thank Athletics Director Jeff Konya, Trent Kersten, and our administration for giving me this opportunity," said Gregory. "It's been a privilege to be a part of this program for the last few years, and I'm excited to see how much farther we can take it. The future is bright for our two volleyball programs here at SJSU!"
