Women's Basketball Adds Nine Players for 2022-23 Season

SAN JOSE, Calif.—The 2022-23 San José State women's basketball team will have a new look this fall as nine newcomers join new head coach April Phillips and the seven returning Spartan players at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
 
The nine newcomers below include local high school product Sabrina Ma who signed a national letter-of-intent in the fall. Five of the new Spartans are transfers from four-year colleges, with two coming from junior colleges and Ma and Sofia Kelemeni from high school.
 
"I am super excited about this class. Outside of being extremely talented basketball players, they are amazing young women. I am excited for Spartan Nation to meet these humans. I know our fans and community will enjoy watching the passion in which they compete," said Phillips.
 
Marisa Davis, 6-1, F, So., Surprise, Ariz./University of Washington

  • Transfer from Washington after spending the 2021-22 season on the roster
  • Graduated from Valley Vista High School in 2021
  • 2021 Gatorade Arizona State Player of the Year
  • Played for coach Rachel Matakas at Valley Vista, winning three state titles in four seasons
  • MaxPreps Arizona High School Player of the Year in 2021
  • Averaged 18 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals per game her senior year

 
Jada Holland, 5-6, G, Sr., Pleasanton, Calif./UC Riverside

  • Transfer from UC Riverside where she played the past two seasons
  • 2021-22 Honorable Mention All-Big West honoree
  • Averaged 11.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game last season
  • Started her collegiate career at Grand Canyon (2019-20)
  • 2020 First Team All-Western Athletic Conference
  • 2020 WAC Freshman and Newcomer of the Year
  • 2020 Her Hoops Stat Fab 15 Freshman team
  • Graduated from Bishop O'Dowd High School in 2019
  • MaxPreps Second Team All-State Division 2 her senior year

 

Sofia Kelemeni, 6-0, G/F, Fr., Kavala, Greece/International School of Greece

  • Represented Greece on the U18 team at the FIBA U18 Women's European Challengers
  • 2019-20 U16 Greece national team
  • Played at the FIBA U16 Women's European Championship
  • Bronze medalist with Team Kavala at national games in 2020

 






Sabrina Ma, 5-10, G, Fr., San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius High School

  • Signed a letter-of-intent in the fall
  • First Team All-WCAL honors
  • Prep2Prep CCS Third Team Honors
  • Two-time San Francisco Italian Athletic Club female basketball player of the year
  • 2022 San Francisco Chronicle San Francisco Regional Player of the Year
  • Averaged 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists per game her senior year

 
Amhyia Moreland, 6-1, F/C, So., Charlotte, N.C./Old Dominion

  • Transfer from Old Dominion after playing the 2021-22 season
  • Graduate of Zebulon B. Vance High School in 2021
  • Two-time NCHSAA 4A champion
  • Recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds in the 2021 state title game
  • Averaged 18.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game her senior year

 





Nailea Nicholas, 6-1, F, So., Fresno, Calif./Northeastern Junior College

  • Played the 2021-22 season at Northeastern Junior College
  • Started 28-of-29 games
  • Averaged 14.5 points per game
  • Born in the Virgin Islands and attended Ivan Eudora Kean HS for three years where she was a part of a championship team

 
Aarion "Oni" Nichols, 5-8, G, Gr., Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Tiffin University

  • Transfer from Tiffin (Ohio) University where she was a four-year starter
  • Averaged 13.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game
  • Two-time First Team All-GMAC selection
  • Fourth all-time at Tiffin in scoring with 1,425 points and rebounding at 789
  • Graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 2018

 
Jasmine Singleton, 5-7, G, Jr., Goodyear, Ariz./Eastern Arizona College

  • Played the 2021-22 season at Eastern Arizona College
  • Averaged 7.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 31 games played
  • Third team All-ACCAC selection
  • Began her collegiate career at UNLV (2020-21)
  • Graduated from Millennium High School in Goodyear, Ariz., in 2020.

 





Semaj Smith, 6-6, C, Gr., Long Beach, Calif./University of Arizona

  • Transfer from the University of Arizona
  • Four-year player for the Wildcats
  • Member of the 2021 Final Four team
  • Graduated from St. Anthony's High School in 2018
  • Rated as a five-star recruit and No. 9 post player in the country her senior year
  • Led her team to the semifinals of the 2017 CIF 1AA Playoffs her junior year
  • Mother, Rhonda, played basketball at Long Beach State where she was a two-time first team All-Big West selection
