SAN JOSE, Calif.—The San José State volleyball program officially released the 2022 season schedule. The Spartans will open the season at the Weber State Tournament on Friday, August 26 with matches against Southern Utah and UC Riverside.
San José State hosts 12 matches inside Spartan Gym this season, opening the home portion of the schedule against Saint Mary's on Friday, September 1. Head coach Trent Kersten welcomes his alma mater's team to the facility as UCLA and Loyola Marymount visit the next week. San José State finishes the non-conference portion of the schedule at the USC Tournament as the team plays New Mexico State, Milwaukee and the host Women of Troy.
After opening Mountain West play on the road September 22 and 24, the Spartans return home to host Boise State and Utah State in the first home conference matches of the season on September 29 and October 1, respectively.
The season concludes with home matches against Fresno State and San Diego State on November 17 and 19, before the top-six teams travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for the 2022 Mountain West Championship inside Moby Arena.
The Spartans return three All-Mountain West player selections from last season – Haylee Nelson, Mia Schafer and Sarah Smevog. Nelson was the team's top hitter with 365 kills, 3.44 per set, and second in digs with 255, 2.41 ps. Schafer averaged 10.25 assists in 69 MW sets played and had eight double-doubles during the conference season. Smevog led the MW in digs during conference play with 303, 4.39 ps, and recorded double-digit digs in every MW match.
The 2021 Spartans finished the season with a 19-10 overall record, the most wins since the 2006 season. The team was 13-5 in the MW, good for third place in the standings. Both were bests for the program since joining the conference in 2013.
