FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Sage Hopkins has been named a finalist for the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Impact Coach of the Year Award.
This is the first year this award has been given out. It is designed to recognize coaches who have committed extraordinary time and energy to positively impact the lives of others through their dedication, hard work and service. It will be given out on Sept. 8 at the Westgate Resort in Las Vegas.
"This award was created so that all coaches have a chance to be recognized for the impact they are having on athletes' lives and on the sport of swimming," said ASCA Board of Directors President Mike Koleber in a statement. "There are a lot of coaches who are more behind the scenes, out of the headlines, doing so much on a daily basis for so many. We want to recognize those exceptional individuals and share their stories. They are the heart and soul of this sport."
Criteria for the nomination include:
-
Examples of how this nominee has had a positive impact on the lives of others through the sport of swimming.
- Illustrate the commitment this nominee has given in terms of their time and energy, as well as their lasting effect to others in the swimming community.
Hopkins has been at the helm of the San José State swimming and diving program since 2005 when he was the interim head coach before taking on the full-time role in 2006. Hopkins has made an impact in and out of the pool as the first Spartan head coach to amass 100 dual meet victories and his teams have been named a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America team in each of the last 15 semesters.
