OGDEN, Utah—Haylee Nelson recorded double-doubles in the two wins Friday and moved up two spots on the all-time kills list as the San José State volleyball team started the 2022 season with victories over Southern Utah (3-1) and UC Riverside (3-1) at the Weber State Tournament.
 
With 32 kills on the day, Nelson moved from 13th place on the San José State career list to 11th after passing Nandyala Gama (1,114) and Niki Clement (1,154). Nelson now has 1,155 career kills and needs 41 to move into
 
San José State 3, Southern Utah 1

  • The Spartans hit .297 for the match.
  • Amethyst Harper led the team with a career-high 19 kills and added 11 digs.
  • Nelson added 15 kills and 11 digs.
  • Yazmin Pitpit hit a team-best .500 in the match with a career-best nine kills on 14 attempts and only two errors.
  • Jiana Lawson made her Spartan debut with five kills and a team-best two blocks.
  • Sarah Smevog led the Spartans with 23 digs, the 19th match of her career with 20 or more digs recorded.

 
San José State 3, UC Riverside 1

  • Nelson with a team-best 17 kills and added 10 digs.
  • Smevog again led the team with 16 digs.
  • Mia Schafer with her first double-double of the season with 25 assists and 14 digs.
  • Alyssa Sugai came off the bench and hit .615 for the match with a career-best eight kills on 13 attempts and no hitting errors.
  • Brooke Bryant added a career-high nine kills and a career-high 24 attempts and two blocks.
  • Lawson had a team-best three block assists to go with four kills.
