SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State football (0-0, 0-0 Mountain West) hosts Portland State (0-0, 0-0 Big Sky) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (PT) to open the season on NBC Sports Bay Area and KTRB 860 AM. SJSU legend James Jones joins Justin Allegri and Kylen Mills on NBC Sports Bay Area, while former star Josh Love joins Kevin Richardson on KTRB 860 AM.

  • SJSU embarks on its 106th season of college football and are opening their season for the first time on a Thursday night since their 35-18 win over Northern Colorado in 2019.
  • The Spartans are 44-54-7 in season-opening games. San Jose State has wins in its last three season openers defeating Southern Utah, 45-14, last season, Air Force, 17-6, in 2020 and Northern Colorado in 2019.
  • San José State seeks four consecutive season opening wins for the first time since 1976 when they beat Utah State, 45-10, in San Jose.
  • This is the second meeting between the schools. The first meeting was a 66-35 win for the Spartans at home in 2016.
  • This is the first time in SJSU history the same head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator are on the staff for the fifth season in a row.
  • Head coach Brent Brennan enters his sixth season at the helm of the Spartans. He joins Claude Gilbert for fourth on the SJSU all-time coaching list. Gilbert coached from 1984-89.
  • Derrick Odum is entering his sixth season as defensive coordinator which is the longest for a defensive coordinator in SJSU history.
  • The Spartans took advantage of the transfer portal this offseason by bringing in 13 with four of them from power five schools. SJSU now has seven players on the roster who came from power five schools.

Coaches Show:

For the first time since 2018, the San José State Coaches Show will air over the radio. Allegri will host and have segments each week from head coach Brent Brennan, special guests and players. Each broadcast can be heard on Thursday night at 7 p.m. on KTRB, with the exception of the first show, which airs on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.

Teskes Germania will be the site of the San José State Coaches Show and it will be taped in front of a live audience every Wednesday night at 6 p.m. with the exception being the first show on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. The restaurant is located at 255 N First St. in San Jose and more information can be found here.
