Spartans Serve & Block Tough in Sweep of New Mexico State

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Mia Schafer recorded a career-best seven service aces as the San José State volleyball team swept New Mexico State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-10) Friday afternoon at the Trojan Challenge inside the Galen Center

  • Schafer was one of four Spartans to record an ace in the match. Sarah Smevog added four aces, with Carly Aigner-Swesey recording two and Haylee Nelson with one.
  • In all, San José State's tough serving led to a season-high 14 aces, the most since a 3-1 win at home over Utah State on November 11, 2021.
  • The 14 aces in a three-set match ties for the sixth-most nationally this season and the second-highest total by a Mountain West team this year.
  • The Spartans again found their blocking prowess with 10.5 blocks in the match including a triple block by Brooke Bryant, Madeline Boerstra and Nelson. Boestra and Bryant led the team with five blocks each.
  • Amethyst Harper hit a season-best .652 for the match as she led the team with 16 kills on 23 attempts and only on error. Her .652 is the sixth-best in the MW this season.
  • Blaire Fleming added 10 kills and hit .375 for the day.
  • Aigner-Swesey, facing the school she played at the past two seasons, had 10 assists and seven digs in the win.
  • Smevog posted her first career double-double with 10 digs and 10 assists, a feat not often achieved by a libero.
  • The Spartan win broke a 23-match losing streak to the Aggies. SJSU last won against New Mexico State on September 20, 1994, in Las Cruces, N.M., when both schools were members of the Big West Conference

The Spartans continue at the Trojan Challenge with a match against Milwaukee on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m., inside the Galen Center.
