With the excessive heat this week in the Bay Area, the decision was made to move this week's San José State matches to Loyola Marymount. The Lions host the Spartans and UCLA inside Gersten Pavilion on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. San José State faces No. 22 UCLA Friday afternoon and host LMU Saturday afternoon.

  •  The Spartans will face two very strong teams as the Bruins enter the weekend with a 4-1 record after winning the Outrigger Volleyball Challenge last weekend in Honolulu. The Lions are 2-3 but went 1-1 last weekend at the Husker Invitational, falling to No. 2 Nebraska, 3-0, but sweeping Ole Miss, 3-0.
  • After two weeks of play, the Spartans find themselves among the top-50 statistical leaders in three categories, including the top-five in two – 2nd in kills per set (15.42) and 3rd in assists per set (14.37).  Individually, Sarah Smevogranks 28th in digs per set at 5.00 ps.
  • This century, San José State has just two wins against nationally-ranked teams. The Spartans last win came against No. 19 Colorado State with a 3-2 home win on November 11, 2017. The only other win over a ranked opponent was at the 2001 NCAA Tournament where San José State came back to upset No. 22 Santa Clara, 3-2, in a first-round match at Stanford.
  • Haylee Nelson can continue her climb up the San José State careers list this week. She enters the weekend with 1,180 kills in 11th place. She needs 16 to move into 10th place and 21 kills to move into ninth place.
  • Sarah Smevog can also move up the San José State career digs list with eight digs. She is currently fifth at 1,342 digs, eight behind Kristal Tsukano at 1,350.
  • Trent Kersten faces his alma mater this Friday when the Spartans play No. 22 UCLA. Kersten graduated from the school in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in geography and environmental studies. Kersten is looking to become the second Spartan coach in school history to defeat his alma mater in the first meeting. Spartan head coach Craig Choate (BYU, 1978) coached the Spartans to a five-set in Provo on September 10, 1994.
  •  For the sixth time in the past four seasons, the Spartans hit .365 or better for a match. SJSU hit .365 at Sacramento State this past Saturday (53-15-104).

UP NEXT: San José State travels back to Los Angeles next week for the Trojan Invitational hosted by Southern California. The Spartans play New Mexico State on the 16th, Milwaukee on the 17th and USC on the 18th.
