Spartans Extend Winning Streak to Nine Matches

SAN JOSE, Calif.—On a night Mia Schafer became the 13th Spartan in school history to record 2,000 career assists, the San José State volleyball team ran its winning streak to nine matches with a 3-1 win over Nevada inside Spartan Gym. The Spartans remain perfect in Mountain West play at 9-0 and improve to 15-4 on the season.
 

  • Schafer recorded her 2,000th career assist in the first set and ended the night with 2,020 in her three years at SJSU. She and Carly Aigner-Swesey finished the night with 24 assists each.
  • Schafer also recorded her fifth double-double of the season and 20th of her career with 10 digs.
  • With the win, the Spartans winning streak extends to nine matches, the longest since the 1999 season when the team won a school-record 14 consecutive matches.
  • For the second time this season, four Spartans recorded double-digit kills in the match, led by Blaire Fleming and Amethyst Harper with 15 each. Letizia Cammillucci added a season-high 14 kills, while Haylee Nelson had 11.
  • San José State hit .308 for the match after starting the night hitting just .167 in the first set. The Spartans did not hit below .321 the rest of the night including .406 in set three.
  • Yazmin Pitpit hit .462 for the match to lead the Spartan hitters as she recorded seven kills on 13 attempts and only one error. She also led the team in blocks with three block assists.
  • The Spartan defense was anchored by three players in double-digit digs, led by Sarah Smevog with 18. Harper added 12 digs for her third double-double of the season, and Schafer had 10 digs.
  • The Spartans lost the first set of the match for the first time since the October 1 win over Utah State.

 
UP NEXT – The Spartans play the first of three road matches on Thursday as the team travels to UNLV for a 6:30 p.m. The match features two of the top-three teams in the conference as UNLV and Colorado State are second in the MW standings at 7-1.
