The Mountain West schedule turns over this week as the conference begins the second half of the season. San José State visits two very familiar foes who the team played just two weeks ago. The Spartans play at Air Force Thursday night and at New Mexico Saturday afternoon.

Air Force has a 9-13 overall record and 1-9 MW mark, while New Mexico has a two-match winning streak with a 13-7 overall record and 4-6 MW record. The team defeated New Mexico State and Fresno State last week.

San José State brings a 15-5 overall record and 9-1 MW mark into the week. The team is tied for first place in the MW after falling at co-leader UNLV last Thursday, 3-1. The Spartans had their nine-match winning streak, the longest since 2001, snapped in the loss.

  • With nine straight wins to start Mountain West play, San José State had the longest winning streak for the program since the 1999 team won a school-record 14 consecutive matches. The 2001 & 2000 teams each had an eight-match winning streak, while the 2021 team won seven consecutive matches.
  • The Spartans started off Mountain West play with a 9-0 record, their best conference record since joining the Mountain West in 2013. The program had not started 9-0 in any conference season since 1985 when the Spartans won the NorPac with a perfect 12-0 record.
  • Spartan head coach Trent Kersten recorded his first win as the San José State head coach when the team played at Air Force on February 13, 2021. The Spartans came from behind in the fourth and fifth sets for the 3-2 win, taking the fifth set 16-14.
  • Twice this season, San José State has had four players record 10 or more kills in a match. The first time came in the 3-2 win at Colorado State as Amethyst Harper led the team with 16 kills, followed by Blaire Fleming with 15, Haylee Nelson at 11 and Jiana Lawson with 10 kills.
  • In two of the past five matches, four Spartans recorded 10 or more digs in a match. At Colorado State, Sarah Smevog led the team with 24 digs, followed by Mia Schafer and Letizia Cammillucci with 11 and Carly Aigner-Swesey with 10. At UNLV last week, Smevog again led the team with 24 digs, followed by Cammillucci with 16 and Harper and Aigner-Swesey each with 10.

UP NEXT: San José State returns home for two crucial MW contests. The Spartans host Colorado State on Thursday, November 3, at 6 p.m., followed by Wyoming on Saturday, November 5, at 1 p.m.
