Spartans Drop Hard-Fought Five-Set Match at Utah State

LOGAN, Utah—Jiana Lawson and Letizia Cammillucci each recorded 14 kills Thursday night as the San José State volleyball team fell 3-2 at Utah State in a hard-fought Mountain West match inside the Wayne Estes Center.
 

  • Lawson hit .478 for the match with her season-best 14 kills on 23 attempts and only three errors. She also led the team with a season-high seven total blocks, two solo and five assists.
  • Cammillucci recorded double-digit kills for the third consecutive match with her 14 kills and added five block assists.
  • Blaire Fleming rounded out the trio of Spartans with double-digit kills at 11.
  • Sarah Smevog led the team with 18 digs and added six assists.
  • Yazmin Pitpit recorded her only hitting error in the third set and hit .467 for the match with eight kills on 15 attempts. She also had four blocks for the night.
  • The Spartans recorded double-digit blocks for the fourth consecutive match and the 11th of the season.
  • Amethyst Harper recorded a career-best four solo blocks and ended the match with five total blocks.
  • On the not so good season-best, San José State had 20 service errors on the night, and the two teams combined for 32 service errors.
  • Haylee Nelson and Mia Schafer led the Spartans with three aces each.
  • Schafer had 30 assists and seven digs, while Carly Aigner-Swesey recorded 23 assists and nine digs.
  • The Spartans dropped the first set before rebounding to win sets two and three. The Aggies rallied to win the fourth set to force a final set.
  • The fifth set featured 12 tied scores and five lead changes before Utah State won 22-20. San José State fought off six match points by Utah State, and the Spartans had match point at 20-19 but could not capitalize.
  • Tonight's match was the 50th meeting between the two schools, and the two teams wore t-shirts in warmups celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Utah State now leads the series 25-24-1.
  • San José State is now 18-7 on the season and 12-3 in the MW.
  • Despite the loss, the Spartans still maintain a two-match lead in the standings as Colorado State was swept at home by New Mexico. The Rams are now tied with Utah State for third place at 10-5.
