The San José State men's basketball team is in the midst of four home games to start the 2022-23 season as the Spartans host Alabama State for game three of four at home. The Spartans have not started the season with three home games since the 2016-17 season when SJSU played West Coast Baptist, Portland and Denver.

San José State brings a 2-0 record into Tuesday after defeating Georgia Southern 63-48, and Bethesda, 90-68, last week. The Spartans are looking to start the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

The Hornets bring an 0-3 record into Tuesday night's game and are finishing a three-game road trip in California after playing at Southern California and Pepperdine over the weekend. Head coach Tony Madlock is in his first season at the school after spending the 2021-22 season at the helm of the South Carolina State program. TJ Madlock, son of Tony, is the team's leading scorer at 16.7 ppg, and led the team in scoring against UAB (25) and Pepperdine (17).

The Spartans finished that season with a 17-16 overall record and played in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.
