Spartans Defeat Oakland Behind 25 From Tolbert

NASSAU, Bahamas—Sage Tolbert III was nearly perfect on Saturday, leading the Spartans in scoring, as the San José State men's basketball got back on the winning train with an 80-67 victory over Oakland on the second day of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship at the Baha Mar Convention Center.
 

  • Tolbert scored a career-best 25 points as he was 11-for-12 from the field including 1-for-1 from three-point range and made both of his free throws attempted. He also grabbed seven rebounds and recorded two steals and a blocked shot.
  • Trey Anderson scored in double figures for the third consecutive game with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point range. He too made all four of his free throw attempts.
  • Omari Moore led the Spartans in rebounding with nine boards and dished out a season-best nine assists.
  • Robert Vaihola came off the bench to score nine points and grab eight rebounds.
  • The Spartans shot 90 percent from the free throw line.
  • San José State led by as many as 26 in the second half, had to overcome a 7:03 scoring drought and finished on a 15-5 scoring run over the final 5:12 of the game for the victory.
  • SJSU shot over 50 percent from the field for the second consecutive night. The Spartans shot 55.4 percent for the game, making 31-of-56 attempts.
  • The Spartans blocked five shots for the second time this year, led by Ibrahima Diallo with two.

The Spartans will face Ball State in the fifth-place game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT. Ball State head coach Michael Lewis was on Tim Miles' coaching staff at Nebraska.
