Fehoko Named MW Defensive Player of The Year to Lead 10 Spartans with All-MW Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Spartan defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko leads 10 San José State football players awarded 2022 All-Mountain West football honors, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Fehoko was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and is the second Spartan to be awarded MW defensive player of the year in the past three seasons (Cade Hall in 2020). Elijah Cooks, Fehoko, Hall and Kyle Harmon were all named to the All-Mountain West Football First Team. Chevan Cordeiro was named to the All-Mountain West Second Team and Tre Jenkins, Justin Lockhart, Dominick Mazotti, Nehemiah Shelton and Chase Williams were named 2022 Honorable Mention.



Viliami Fehoko, DL, Junior, East Palo Alto, Calif./St. Francis HS

  • First MW Defensive Player of the Year Award
  • All-Mountain West First Team Selection (2020, 21, 22)
  • Ted Hendricks Award Finalist (top defensive end)
  • PFF All-America Second Team (2022)
  • Leads the MW and is fourth in the country with a career-high 18.5 tackles for loss and is second in the league and 10th in the country with a career-high nine sacks in 11 games played.
  • Also has a career-high 65 tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one pass deflection this season.
  • Named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week (10/31/22) and East-West Shrine Defensive Player of the Week (10/17/22).

Elijah Cooks, WR, Graduate Student, Atascadero, Calif./Nevada

  • First All-Mountain First Team Selection
  • Leads the MW and is 11th in the country with a career-high 10 touchdowns and is second in the league with a career-high 983 yards in 11 games played.
  • Leads the Spartans in all receiving categories and is fifth in the MW with 63 receptions.
  • Is 18th in the country averaging 89.4 receiving yards per game.
  • Has touchdowns in four straight games and seven total during that stretch.

Cade Hall, DL, Graduate Student, Morgan Hill, Calif./Bellarmine Prep

  • All-Mountain West First Team (2020, 22)
  • Is sixth in the MW with 7.5 sacks and eighth in the conference with a career-high 12 tackles for loss in 11 games played.
  • Also has 32 tackles, an interception, a pass deflection and a forced fumble this season.
  • Had career-high four sacks and tied career-high with 4.0 tackles for loss vs. Nevada (10/29/22)
  • Had a sack, two tackles for loss, one forced fumble and four tackles at Utah State (11/19/22)

Kyle Harmon, LB, Graduate Student, Antioch, Calif./Freedom HS

  • All-Mountain West First Team (2020, 21, 22) 
  • Leads the Spartans with 94 tackles which is good for sixth in the MW in 11 games played.
  • Has a career-high three sacks with five tackles for loss and a career-high two pass deflections.
  • Season high 14 tackles at Utah State (11/19/22)
  • Led team with 10 tackles and a sack plus 2.0 tackles for loss at San Diego State (11/12/22)


Chevan Cordeiro, QB, Junior, Honolulu, Hawaii/Saint Louis HS

  • First All-Mountain West Second Team Selection
  • Thrown for a career-high 2,885 yards and a career-high 20 touchdowns this season which both lead the Mountain West and in 11 games played.
  • Has thrown for a touchdown in nine straight games and has thrown for 13 touchdowns in the last five games.
  • Has only four interceptions on 383 attempts which only Tennessee's Hendon Hooker, LSU's Jayden Daniels, TCU's Max Duggan and USC's Caleb Williams have over 300 passing attempts and less than four interceptions.
  • Has run for a career-high eight touchdowns which is the most for an SJSU quarterback in the modern era.


Tre Jenkins, S, Senior, Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's HS

  • All-Mountain West Honorable Mention Selection (2021, 22)
  • Has a career-high two interceptions, career-high five pass deflections, career-high two sacks and a career-high seven tackles for loss in 11 games played.
  • Tied for team lead with two interceptions.
  • Has 60 tackles and a forced fumble as well.
  • Led team with nine tackles and one quarterback hit vs. Hawai'i (11/26/22)

Justin Lockhart, WR, Sophomore, Los Angeles, Calif./Nevada

  • First All-Mountain West Honorable Mention Selection
  • Has a career-high 566 yards receiving with a career-high averaging 16.6 yards per reception
  • Has 34 receptions on the season in 11 games played.
  • Caught four passes for 116 yards against WMU (9/24/22)
  • Had six receptions for 91 yards against Nevada (10/29/22)

Dominick Mazotti, TE, Junior, Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley HS

  • First All-Mountain West Honorable Mention Selection
  • Has a career-high 21 receptions with a career-high 216 yards.
  • Has a career-high three touchdowns in seven games played.
  • Had five catches for 44 yards and a touchdown catch vs. Nevada (10/29/22)
  • Career-high 100 yards on career-high seven catches and first career TD vs. UNLY (10/7/22)

Nehemiah Shelton, CB, Graduate Student, Gardena, Calif./Serrra HS

  • All-Mountain West Honorable Mention Selection (2021, 22)
  • Leads team with eight pass deflections and tied for team lead in interceptions with two
  • Had eight tackles with one for loss and a single game career-high four pass deflections vs. Hawai'i (11/26/22)
  • Has 44 tackles with a career-high 1.5 tackles for loss in 11 games played.
  • Had eight tackles and a pass deflection at Utah State (11/19/22)

Chase Williams, S, Redshirt Junior, Eastvale, Calif./USC

  • First All-Mountain West Honorable Mention Selection
  • Tied for team lead with a career-high two interceptions.
  • Has 37 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss and a career-high three pass deflections in 10 games played.
  • Seven tackles and second interception of season at Utah State (11/19/22)
  • Tied career high with seven tackles vs. CSU (11/05/22)

NEXT GAME: The Spartans are going to a bowl game for the first time since 2020. It will be Brent Brennan's second bowl game as head coach of the Spartans and he is the first head coach to lead the Spartans to two bowl games since Claude Gilbert in 1986 and 1987.
