Historic Win for Spartans at MW Tournament

LAS VEGAS —Historic. One word to describe Thursday's San José State men's basketball win as Mountain West Player of the Year Omari Moore had a double-double with 26 points and 10 assists to lead San José State to a 81-77 win over Nevada in a quarterfinal game at the Mountain West Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.

  • With his 26 points, Moore moved into sixth all-time in scoring at San José State at 1,273 points, passing Ryan Welage (1,258) and Justin Graham (1,272).
  • Sage Tolbert III scored 20 points, his second 20+-point game of the season. He was 8-of-13 from the field and grabbed six rebounds in the win
  • Moore and Tolbert are the first Spartan duo to score 20 or more points in the same game since Myron (MJ) Amey, Jr. and Tibet Görener scored 32 and 23 points respectively against Bethesda on January 8, 2022.
  • Before March 9, 2023, the Spartan men's basketball program had not won a game at the MW Tournament. SJSU has not reached the semifinals of a conference tournament since the 2011 WAC Tournament when the Spartans beat Hawaii (75-74) and Idaho (74-68) to face Utah State in the semifinals when the team lost 58-57.
  • The Spartans are now 20-12 on the season, the first time since 1980-81 that the program has recorded 20 wins. That year, the team finished 22-9 and played in the NIT.
  • Moore moved up the San José State single-season scoring list with 569 points, tying Marquin Chandler (2004-05) for the fifth-best scoring season.
  • Moore is also now third on the SJSU single-season assists list with 156, passing Michael Dixon (1983-84) who had 155.
  • Two other Spartans scored in double figures as Alvaro Cardenas had 14 points, while Robert Vaihola added 10 points and led the team in rebounding with eight off the bench.
  • The Spartans are 3-0 in overtime games this season.

UP NEXT – The Spartans advance to the semifinals of the MW Tournament on Friday to face top-seeded San Diego State at 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch on CBS Sports Network or listen to KTRB, 860 AM.
