SJSU Joins the Mountain West Conference for Gymnastics

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced today the addition of Women's Gymnastics as the Conference's 19th sponsored sport starting with the 2023-2024 academic year.

"The addition of women's gymnastics to the Mountain West will allow us to cultivate more opportunities for female student-athletes to compete at the highest level while promoting the academic missions of our member institutions," said MW Commissioner Gloria Nevarez. "The profile of women's college gymnastics is exploding. What an exciting time for the Mountain West to add one of the most popular high school and collegiate sports."

The competing institutions in MW Women's Gymnastics will include the United States Air Force Academy, Boise State University, San José State University, and Utah State University.

The league will discuss the Conference's regular-season and postseason formats soon.

"We are so excited to have the Mountain West add women's gymnastics!  Our sport is growing, and to be able to represent the Mountain West, along with our San José State Athletics Department, is such a huge deal for us. We will make the Conference proud and be instantly competitive across the country, as all of us within the league are gymnastics teams on the rise. Thank you to the MW Board of Directors and Commissioner Gloria Nevarez for seeing our value, and a big thank you to our SJSU Athletic Director, Jeff Konya, for pushing to get this done. Let's Go, Mountain West Gymnastics!"
Joanne Bowers, Head gymnastics coach at San José State

"I am thrilled with the announcement that the Mountain West is adding the sport of women's gymnastics to its sports portfolio. As a member of the NCAA Gymnastics committee, I see firsthand the impressive growth and interest in the sport and the many talented student-athletes that compete in this space. I give the Mountain West a perfect '10' for providing SJSU gymnasts the opportunity to compete for a league championship beginning in the 2023-24 academic year."
Jeff Konya, San José State Director of Athletics and NCAA Division I Women's Gymnastics Committee Member
