Spartans Picked Second In MW Preseason Coaches Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.—For the first time in school history, the San José State women’s gymnastics team will compete for a Mountain West Championship this March. As a preview to the season, the Spartans were picked second in the inaugural MW Preseason Coaches Poll.

  • The Spartans earned a first-place vote and 24 points in the poll.
  • Boise State was picked to finish first with 30 votes and three first-place votes. Utah State is third, followed by Air Force.
  • The Spartans return MPSF Gymnast of the Year Lauren Macpherson. She was the 2023 MPSF All-Around Champion and competed in the all-around at the NCAA Los Angeles Regional.
  • Macpherson is tied with Thomasina Wallace for the second-best all-around score at 39.550 in school history.
  • Macpherson is also the co-beam school record at 9.950.
  • Jaudai Lopes was the MPSF Co-Vault Champion and competed at the NCAA Regional on the vault.
  • Lopes set the vault school record last season with a 9.950.
  • Jada Mazury returns for her fifth year after competing on the floor at the NCAA Regional.
  • Other returning Spartans include Kyra Cato, Natasha Forrand, Chloe Frank, Trinity Johnson, Madison Kirsch, Sophia Konieczny, Makayla McMahon, Mikaela Pitts and Katherine Weyhmiller.
  • The Spartans welcome five newcomers to the team – Marissa Ashton, Mia Nelson, Ella Power, Olivia Reardon and Devyn Valuch.
  • San José State begins the 2024 season at the Super 16 in Las Vegas on January 5.
  • The Spartans host four meets this season at the Provident Credit Union Event Center
    • January 28 vs. Sacramento State, 2 p.m.
    • February 4 vs. Air Force, 2 p.m.
    • February 9 vs. UC Davis 7 p.m.
    • March 10 vs. Boise State, Illinois State, Yale, 2 p.m.

The 2024 MW Gymnastics Championships will take place on Saturday, March 23, in Logan, Utah, hosted by Utah State.
