Nelson, Lopes Win Event Titles To Lead Spartans Friday Night

BOISE, Idaho—Freshman Mia Nelson and senior Jaudai Lopes won event titles Friday night to lead the San José State women’s gymnastics team to a season-high 195.625 team score at the Boise State Quad at ExtraMile Arena.

  • Nelson scored the team’s highest individual score of the season so far with a 9.925 on floor to win her first collegiate event title.
  • Lopes had a season-best 9.900 on vault to tie for first place.
  • The Spartan floor team scored a 49.425, tying for the second-best score on floor in school history. Three gymnasts scored a 9.900 or higher – Lopes and Jada Mazury at 9.900 to go with Nelson’s 9.925.
  • San José State scored a season-high 195.625, becoming the first team in school history to record that score and the 19th-highest at SJSU.
  • The bars team started the night with a 48.775, as Katherine Weymiller anchored the team with a 9.825.
  • Madison Kirsch led the beam team with a season-high 9.850, followed by Lauren Macpherson at 9.825.
  • Devyn Valuch made her collegiate beam debut with a 9.725.
  • The vault team was led by Lopes at 9.900, and Kirsch at 9.825.

UP NEXT – The Spartans host the first of three consecutive home meets on Sunday, January 28, against Sacramento State. The meet begins at 2 p.m., inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
