SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State has added running backs coach Michael Smith, Assistant Athletics Director for Football Operations Garrett Wolfe and Head Football Athletic Trainer Kyle Wolff to the football staff and Clesi Crochet has moved to Director of Football Operations, announced by head coach Ken Niumatalolo on Thursday.

Running Backs Coach Michael Smith
- Smith comes to SJSU after one season as the Associate Head Coach, Run Game Coordinator, and Running Backs Coach at Northern Colorado.
- Smith came to Northern Colorado after spending four seasons on the Utah Tech Football coaching staff. At Utah Tech, he was a defensive assistant coach.
- In 2018, he was a defensive analyst at BYU and prior to that Smith served three years (2015-18) as a football strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Oregon State.
- Smith was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the seventh round of the 2012 National Football League draft as a running back out of Utah State.
- He spent two years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a short time with the New York Jets before injuries hampered his NFL career. Smith’s professional career also included a stint with the Ottawa Redbacks of the Canadian Football League in 2014, before he retired and turned to coaching.
Assistant Athletics Director for Football Operations Garrett Wolfe
- Wolfe is also the Football Chief of Staff and comes from Stanford where he was Director of Football Operations since January 2023.
- Wolfe also spent four previous seasons at Stanford (2015-18) and finished his tenure as the Assistant Director of Recruiting Operations.
- Prior to his latest stint at Stanford, Wolfe spent four seasons as Director of Football Operations and Assistant Athletic Director for Football Administration at Sacramento State.
- Wolfe has also worked at Portland State and the Sacramento Mountain Lions (UFL) and graduated from Texas.
