RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.—Lucia Lopez Ortega and Kajsa Arwefjäll sit in the top the individual leaderboard, and the San José State women’s golf team has a six-shot lead after the first round of the Mountain West Championship at the Mission Hills Golf Club.
- Lopez Ortega shot a 5-under 67 and has a one-shot lead over Arwefjäll after the first round. Her 67 ties for the third-lowest round shot by an individual at the championship.
- Lopez Ortega was 2-under for her final nine holes and made six birdies over her 18 holes. Her only blemish on her card was a bogey on the par-3 eighth hole.
- She leads the field in par-4 scoring at -5 and is second in the field in birdies made.
- Arwefjäll shot a 4-under 68, making five birdies, 12 pars and one bogey on the day.
- After starting 1-over through three holes with a bogey on the third hole, she had a clean card for the rest of the round, making a birdie on two of her three final holes.
- Arwefjäll leads the field in par-3 scoring at 1-under par and is tied for third in birdies made.
- Rebecca Gyllner is tied for 11th at even-par 72, making two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars for her round.
- Louisa Carlbom is tied for 17th at 1-over 73, making two birdies during her round.
- Darae Chung shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 25th. She finished her round with a birdie on 18.
- The Spartans shot an 8-under 280 to open the Mountain West Championships, the second-lowest score shot by a team in the first round. The record is 279 set by the Spartans in 2022.
- The team has a six-shot lead over Colorado State and nine-shot lead over UNLV.
