Women's Golf Wins Mountain West Championships

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.—Kajsa Arwefjäll shot a 6-under 66 to claim the 2024 Mountain West Individual title and helped the San José State women’s golf team win their second MW title in three years Thursday at the Mission Hills Country Club.

  • Arwefjäll won her second consecutive individual title in as many tournaments as she recorded a 9-under 207 for the three rounds.
  • She had a clean card in the third round with her six birdies and 12 pars.
  • Arwefjäll’s 207 is the second-lowest 54-hole score shot in the 24-year history of the tournament, one shot from former Spartan Natasha Andrea Oon who had a 10-under 206 to win in 2022.
  • Arwefjäll joins Oon as the only two Spartans to win the MW Individual Championship.
  • In her four years at the championship, Arwefjäll finished tied for ninth in 2021, tied for third in 2022, second in 2023 and champion in 2024.
  • Her 66 ties for the second-lowest individual score at the championship and her low score this year.
  • Arwefjäll led the field in par-3 scoring (-1) and par-4 scoring (-5) and was second in the field in birdies made with 16.

 

 

  • San José State shot a 9-under 279 in the final round to win by 18 shots at 17-under 847.
  • The Spartans set the tournament record for lowest 54-hole score with the 847, besting the record of 853 set by New Mexico in 2023.
  • The 18-shot victory is the fourth-biggest in championship history.

 

 

  • Lucia Lopez Ortega finished third at 5-under 211, shooting a 2-under 70 in the third round.
  • Lopez Ortega started her round 5-over through the first five holes of the day, making double bogey-bogey-par-par-double bogey to start and shot a 40 for the first nine holes.
  • Starting on hole nine, Lopez Ortega made five consecutive birdies to pull herself back to even par. She finished the round making back-to-back birdies to shoot a 30 for the back nine.
  • With her seven birdies made on Thursday, Lopez Ortega led the tournament in birdies with 17.
  • Louisa Carlbom and Rebecca Gyllner tied for ninth place at even-par 216. Carlbom shot an even-par 72 in the final round with four birdies. Gyllner had a 1-over 73, and had two birdies and nine pars over her final 11 holes played.
  • Darae Chung finished 17th at 3-over 219, shooting her best round of the championship with a 1-under 71 on Thursday. She made four birdies on her round including on the par-5 18th hole.

UP NEXT – The Spartans will await word on where they will head for NCAA Regional play as the selection show will be Wednesday, April 24, on Golf Channel at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET. Regionals will be held May 6-8, with the top-five teams advancing from the six regionals to the NCAA Championships, May 17-22 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
