SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San José State track & field team will send 16 athletes in total, 4 women and 12 men to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds this Wednesday through Saturday, May 22-25. The competition will kick off with men’s first round events on Wednesday starting at 10:00 a.m. CST from John McDonnell Field at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. The events can be seen on ESPN+.
- In order to qualify for the NCAA West Prelim the top 48 declared athletes were accepted into the first round competitions for each individual event and the top 24 declared relay teams were accepted into the first round competitions for each relay event.
- The top 12 competitors from each individual event and the top 12 teams from each relay event will advance to the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
- The Spartans will send 16 athletes to Fayetteville to compete across 10 individual events and two relay events.
- The Spartans are coming off of a strong performance at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Clovis, Calif. two weeks ago.
- The Spartans finished with a team total of 164 points which is the most in school history for the MW Championships.
- The Spartans finished the weekend with 13 medals overall, 9 golds, two silvers and two bronzes.
- The Spartans rewrote the Mountain West Outdoor Championship record books breaking four meet records overall in the Men’s 4x100 Relay, Men’s 100m Dash, Men’s 110m Hurdles and the Men’s 400m Dash.
- Jaden Smith won four gold medals on the day in the Men’s 200m Dash, 400m Dash, 4x100, and 4x400 Relays while also breaking meet records in the 400m Dash and the 4x100 Relay.
- Smith won the Men’s 400m Dash taking gold with a lifetime best and MW Outdoor Championships meet record time of 45.40.
- Smith took gold with a late push in the Men's 200m Dash with a career best time of 20.63.
- Smith sits currently ranked 17th in the nation and fourth in the west region for the Men’s 400m.
- Malachi Snow won three gold medals and broke three meet records in the Men’s 110m Hurdles, 100m Dash and the 4x100 Relay at the MW Outdoor Championships.
- Snow took gold in the Men’s 110m Hurdles with a MW meet record time of 13.40.
- Snow also won the Men’s 100m dash with another MW meet record time of 10.14 seconds.
- Snow’s time also set a new SJSU all-time outdoor school record surpassing Speed City original Ronnie Ray Smith (1968).
- Snow currently ranks fourth in the nation and first in the west region for the Men’s 110m Hurdles.
- Snow is currently ranked fourth in the west region for the Men’s 100m.
- Emilia Sjostrand went two for two in gold medals at the MW Outdoor Championships, winning the Women’s Triple Jump and Long Jump events
- Sjostrand won the Women’s Triple Jump with a jump of 13.67 meters.
- Sjostrand won the Women’s Long Jump on her last attempt with a lifetime best jump of 6.50 meters.
- With her jump, Sjostrand broke her own SJSU record in the Women’s Long Jump.
- Sjostrand is currently ranked 20th in the nation and second in the west region for Women’s Long Jump.
- Sjostrand is currently ranked fourth in the nation and second in the west region for Women’s Triple Jump.
- Harry Overstreet, Smith, Isaiah Gilmore and Jeremiah Walker in the last event of the day won gold in the Men’s 4x400 Relay with a career best time of 3:07.21.
- The squad won the Men’s 4x400 Relay for the first time in school history for the MW Championships.
- The group is currently ranked fifth in the west region for the Men’s 4x400 Relay.
- Snow, Cameron Tarver, Smith and Isaac Davis took gold in the Men’s 4x100 Relay with a MW Outdoor Championship meet record time of 39.34 seconds.
- The Men’s 4x100 group also moved in to second place on the SJSU all-time outdoor record book with their time.
- The squad currently ranks sixth in the west region for the Men’s 4x100 Relay.
- Tarver also took bronze in the Men's 200m Dash with a time of 20.84 seconds.
- Demaris Waters took silver in the Men’s 100m Hurdles with a time of 13.54.
- Waters currently ranks 12th in the nation and second in the west region in the Men’s 110m Hurdles.
- Micah Hairston grabbed bronze in the Men’s 110m Hurdles to complete the podium sweep with a time of 13.95.
- Sky Hagan took silver in the Women’s 100m Hurdles with a time of 13.37.
- Hagan tied her career best with her time in the 100m Hurdles.
- Ajamu Reed in the Men’s Long Jump won the event with a season best jump of 7.81 meters for the first gold medal of the weekend for the Spartans.
- Reed became the first SJSU athlete to win the Men’s Long Jump at the MW Outdoor Championships.
- Reed is currently ranked sixth in the west region in the Men’s Long Jump
