Waters and Snow Lead Spartans on First Day of NCAA West Prelims

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Demaris Waters and Malachi Snow both won their heats with personal best times in the Men’s 110m Hurdles and Men’s 100m respectively, qualifying and moving on to Friday’s quarterfinals for San José State Track & Field after the first day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds hosted by Arkansas on Wednesday from John McDonnell Field. 

The first day of competition kicked off the men’s first round events in Fayetteville. In order to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday, the top 24 athletes from each individual event will qualify with the top three from each heat plus the next six best times moving on to the next round.

  • Waters won his heat in the Men’s 110m Hurdles with a personal best time of 13.47 to grab an automatic qualification for the quarterfinals on Friday.
  • Waters had the eighth best time of the day across all heats in the Men’s 110mH.
  • Snow won his heat in the Men’s 100m with a personal best time of 10.13 to secure an automatic qualification for Friday’s quarterfinals. 
  • Snow’s time was the fourth fastest of the day across all six heats for the Men’s 100m. 
  • Snow’s time of 10.13 broke the SJSU all-time outdoor record for the Men’s 100m previously held by Speed City original Ronnie Ray Smith, a record he tied just two weeks ago at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships.
  • Snow also took fourth in his heat in the Men’s 110m Hurdles with a time of 13.77, earning a next best time qualification advancing to Friday’s quarterfinals. 
  • Jaden Smith with a time of 45.90 in his heat for the Men’s 400m grabbed a qualification for the quarterfinals on Friday.
  • Ajamu Reed competing in the Men’s Long Jump had a jump of 7.70m just barely missing the cut for advancement to Eugene and ending his individual season.
  • Cameron Tarver competing in the Men’s 200m finished his heat with a time of 20.87 just missing the cut for the quarterfinals and ending his individual season.
  • Zaire Waring finished fourth in his heat for the Men’s 400m Hurdles with a time of 52.07 missing the cut and ending his individual season.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will continue the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with the second day of competition kicking off the women’s events on Thursday, May 23. Field events are set to begin at 8:30 a.m. CDT and track events will start at 3:00 p.m. CDT from John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark. You can watch all of the events on ESPN+.
