Baptista and Guerra Lead the Spartans in a Narrow 2-1 Loss at #5 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Diogo Baptista netted a goal and Edgar Guerra made six saves for the San José State men's soccer team (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WAC) in a narrow 2-1 loss on the road against No. 5 Stanford (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) on Thursday night. The game marked the 2024 season opener for both squads.

  • In the 79th minute, Baptista shot the ball with his left foot outside the box and curved it off the backpost and into the net. Baptista's goal was his first of the season and first as a Spartan.
  • Guerra made six saves and allowed only one goal in his debut for SJSU. His six saves were the most saves in a game by a Spartan goalie since David Sweeney tallied eight saves on Nov. 11, 2022 against Seattle.
  • Angel Iniguez recorded an assist on Baptista's goal, his first assist of the season and 13th of his career.
  • Daniel Fregoso Bautista recorded a shot on goal in his collegiate debut.
  • Cameron Cook, Neo Ruiz and Jordi Tortell Daly all made their collegiate debuts as well.
