Spartans Sweep CBU To Win Hawkeye Invite

CORALVILLE, IowaNayeli Ti’a recorded her third double-double of the weekend as the San José State volleyball team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 3-0 (25-5, 26-25, 27-25) win over California Baptist Sunday morning in the final match of the Hawkeye Invite #1.

  • Ti’a recorded a season-high 23 kills and a team-best 16 digs for her 10th career double-double.
  • The Spartans were down 24-16 in the third set and scored 8 consecutive points to tie set at 24-24, getting four key kills from Brooke Bryant during the run.
  • The Spartans held off nine set points by the Lancers to win the fourth set 27-25.
  • Bryant ended the match with nine kills and hit .308.
  • Emma Testi led the Spartans with six blocks, 1 solo and 5 assists.
  • Brooke Slusser added another double-double with 32 assists and 14 digs. She also hit .312 with seven kills on 16 attempts and only two errors.
  • Ti’a was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Slusser and Blaire Fleming were named to the all-tournament team.
  • The Spartans hit .279 for the match and outblocked the Lancers 11-7.
  • San José State has started the season 5-0 for the first time since the 1995 team started 5-0.

UP NEXT – The Spartans play in the Bay Area or the Central Valley for the rest of September, beginning next weekend at the Santa Clara Tournament. SJSU faces Southern Utah on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by Santa Clara on Sunday at 4 p.m.
