Spartans Start Strong in Doubles at the ITA Northwest Regional

BERKELEY, CALIF. Duru Durgun won in her doubles match and both of her singles matches to lead the San José State women’s tennis team on the first day of the ITA Northwest Regional.

  • The Spartans won in all three of their doubles matches while four Spartans competed in various singles matches in the qualifying draws
  • Durgun and Emma Fantousis defeated Isabella Foshee and Anait Arutiunian from Eastern Washington 8-4
  • Cheuk Ying Shek and Carla Urchoeguia outmatched Chidimma Okpara and Morgan Shaffer from Stanford 8-6
  • Olaya Bances Iglesias and Nahjime Dho triumphed over Eliza Dunbar and Sofia Pizzoni from Fresno State 8-7, (7-5)
  • Durgun took down her opponent, Martina Markov from Washington State winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 64
  • Nahjime Dho dominated against Polina Marakhtanova from Davis in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 64
  • Bances Iglesias advanced in the round of 64 after Scarlett Perkins from Portland was unable to continue due to injury, 4-0 (RET[inj])
  • Durgun progressed in the round of 32 as her opponent, Anait Arutiunian from Eastern Washington was unable to continue due to injury, 2-0 (RET[inj])
  • Bances Iglesias secured a victory in the round of 32 against Maya Youssef from Davis, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4
  • Dho was later bested by Rose Hayes from Gonzaga 2-6, 6-2, 4-6, in the round of 32
  • Fantousis came up short against Alaia Rubio Perez from Portland, 6-3, 2-6, 0-6

UP NEXT: The Spartans will continue in doubles matches and singles qualifying matches tomorrow, while singles matches in the main draw featuring Ying Shek and Urchoeguia will commence.
