Szabo Leads No. 13 Spartans in Victories over No. 19 Brown and No. 20 Navy on Second Day of Harvard Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Bence Szabo scored 10 goals across two matches to lead the No. 13 San José State men’s water polo team (9-3, 1-1 WCC) in a 17-11 victory over No. 19 Brown (11-6, 3-2 NWPC) and in a 16-13 win over the hosts No. 20 Navy (14-7, 4-2 CWPA) on the final day of the Harvard Invitational. SJSU went 4-0 at the Harvard Invitational with three of the four victories coming against ranked opponents.

 

Vs. No. 19 Brown

  • Szabo led the Spartans with six goals in the match, the most goals scored in a single game by a Spartan this season.
  • Szabo also drew eight exclusions in the match, the most in any game this season for the Spartans by far.
  • Mateja Bosić tallied six points in the match, consisting of three goals and three assists.
  • Jamie Steingraf scored three goals in the match.
  • Mitchell Keightley and Samu Biros each tallied two points in the game.
  • Erik Duesund, Eric Ellison and Louis Fehrensen also all scored in the match.
  • Mael Suchet and Maro Tiozzo both recorded an assist. 
  • The 17 goals in the game were the most scored by the Spartans in any game so far this season.

 

Vs. No. 20 Navy

  • Keightley led the Spartans with six points consisting of five goals and an assist.
  • Keightley also recorded six steals in the match.
  • Szabo recorded another four goals in the second match of the doubleheader.
  • With 10 goals on the day, Szabo now has surpassed 100 career goals in his career.
  • Biros notched four points in the match with two goals and two assists.
  • Tiozzo scored twice in the game while Giancarlo Marquez, Mattin Sarhaddi and Duesund each scored once.
  • Bosič led the team with three assists in the game. Steingraf and Fehrensen each tallied two assists.
  • Connor MacMillan and Austin Hexter each recorded an assist, as well.

Up Next: The Spartans will return home to take on Fordham on Oct. 24 at noon at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center.
