Tiozzo and Gyapjas Lead No. 13 Spartans past No. 16 Cal Baptist

SAN JOSE, Calif. Maro Tiozzo recorded a season high seven points and Brendon Gyapjas tallied 17 saves to lead the No. 13 San José State men’s water polo team (14-6, 3-2 WCC) in a 13-12 comeback victory over No. 16 Cal Baptist (20-12, 3-3 WCC) at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center.

  • Tiozzo’s seven points consisted of four goals and three assists.
  • Mitchell Keightley scored the game-tying and go-ahead goals for the Spartans. He also racked up an assist and a steal in the game.
  • Mateja Bosić tallied a goal and four assists in the match.
  • Samu Biros notched a goal and two assists.
  • Jamie Steingraf recorded a goal and an assist.
  • Bence Szabo tallied a goal, four drawn exclusions and two steals.
  • Mael Suchet, Mattin Sarhaddi and Erik Duesund all scored a goal in the match.
  • Connor MacMillan also assisted on a goal.
  • With 17 saves in the game, Gyapjas now has 146 saves on the season. He also assisted on a goal.
  • Gyapjas saved the potential Cal Baptist game-tying goal with just seconds left. 
  • Nine of the Spartans’ 14 wins this season have come over ranked opponents.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will close out the regular season at home against Air Force on Sunday, November 17, at noon at the Spartans Recreation and Aquatic Center. The match will be streamed on ESPN+. The Spartans will also honor three seniors, Steingraf, Szabo and MacMillan, before the game.
