Spartans Drop Opening Day Game to Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. - Jeriah Lewis collected both runs for the Spartans and hit a solo run to lead the San José State baseball team (0-1, 0-0 MW) in a 7-2 loss to Louisiana (1-0, 0-0 SBC) at Russo Park. 

  • Jesse Gutierrez made his first career start, pitching four innings. Gutierrez recorded four strikeouts and only allowing two hits.
  • Kyle Calzadiaz notched three strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched.
  • Antonio Nanez recorded his first RBI with a single to right field to score Lewis.
  • Lewis' solo home run occured in the eighth inning.
  • Ishaan Khambal and Wade Mountz made their first collegiate appearances.
  • SJSU outhit Louisiana 8-4 in the game.
  • This is the first meeting of the two programs since the College World Series on June 6, 2000.
