Spartans Split Day One Doubleheader at Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Ahmiya Noriega hit two triples and now leads the nation with six on the season, while Taylor Chillingworth hit her first career home run to lead San José State softball (6-6, 0-0 MW) in a 9-1 five-inning game one loss against CSUN (4-8, 0-0 Big West) and a 10-1 game two five-inning win over Howard (4-4, 0-0 MEAC) at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic from Big League Dreams Sports Parks on Friday night.

The Spartans would start a little slow in game one against CSUN, but the bats would come alive in game two with back-to-back five-run innings while Lacie Ham pitched five innings of one-hit ball to secure the run-rule win against the Bison of Howard.

Game One vs. CSUN

  • Carly Cummings finished 1-for-2 with an RBI single.
  • Cummings RBI is her second of the season. 
  • Cummings now has a hit in her last five consecutive games. 
  • Shay McDowell finished 1-for-2 with a double and one run scored. 
  • Sarah Deplitch went 1-for-2 with a single. 
  • Deplitch now has a hit in three straight games. 
  • Gigi Ortega drew a walk. 
  • Ortega now has five walks on the season. 
  • Mia Reynolds got the start in the circle. 
  • Ava Conti made a relief appearance going three innings with two strikeouts.

Game Two vs. Howard

  • Noriega finished the second game 2-for-3 with two triples, four RBIs, and two runs scored.  
  • Noriega now has six triples on the season, which currently leads the nation. 
  • Noriega has hit a triple in five out of her last six games. 
  • Noriega is now the team leader in RBIs with 11 this season. 
  • Chillingworth finished 2-for-2 with a home run, single, three RBIs, and one run scored.  
  • Chillingworth’s home run is the first of her career for the redshirt freshman. 
  • McDowell went 1-for-2 with an RBI double, a walk, and two runs scored.  
  • McDowell’s double was her second of the day, with one in the first game against CSUN.
  • She now has three doubles on the season, surpassing her career high. 
  • Aubrie Thomas went 1-for-2 with a single walk and two runs scored.
  • Thomas now leads the team with seven walks so far this season.   
  • Taylor Squires drew a walk, tallied her first RBI of the season, and scored a run. 
  • Ham got the start in circle and would give a dominant performance going five innings to get the complete game win, while racking up seven strikeouts and only giving up one run on one hit. 
  • Ham now has two complete-game efforts in the young season.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will continue the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with another two games against #15 Nebraska and LMU on Saturday from Big League Dreams Sports Parks. Game one is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT, and game two is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT.
