Spartans Win in Finale at Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. –  Aneesa Almaguer had two hits, and Gigi Ortega had two RBIs to lead San José State softball (7-8, 0-0 MW) in a 7-5 win over UC Santa Barbara (9-7, 0-0 Big West) in their final game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic from Big League Dreams Sports Parks on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans jumped on the board early, putting up runs in the first and third innings, and then would add five more with a big fifth inning. The Gauchos would make a push to come back, but the SJSU pitching staff held tough to secure the win. 

  • Almaguer finished 2-for-4 with two singles, one RBI, and one run scored. 
  • This is Almaguer’s second multi-hit game this season. 
  • Alamguer now has five RBIs on the season.
  • Ortega finished 1-for-3 with a single, 2 RBIs, and a walk. 
  • Ortega’s two RBIs set a new career high for the freshman.
  • Ahmiya Noriega ended the game 1-for-3 with a double, one RBI, one stolen base, and a run scored.
  • Noriega’s double is her second of the season, and she now has 14 runs batted in on the year.
  • Aubrie Thomas went 1-for-3 with a single, a hit by a pitch, and three runs scored.
  • Thomas now has a hit in four consecutive games.
  • Thomas set a new season high with three runs scored. 
  • Taylor Chillingworth finished 1-for-4 with an RBI single. 
  • Chillingworth now has five RBIs this season and for her career.
  • Jules Ronquillo went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single
  • Ronquillo now has three pinch hits this season.
  • Sarah Deplitch also went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single of her own.
  • Deplitch’s pinch hit is the first of her career.
  • Carly Cummings went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk
  • Cummings now has five walks this season.
  • Shay McDowell had an RBI and a run scored
  • Haley Reeve had an RBI on a sac fly
  • Mia Reynolds made the start in the circle and would reenter at the end of the game to shut the door and get the save. 
  • Lacie Ham made a relief appearance and got the win.
