SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Shay McDowell had two hits and Ahmiya Noriega had a RBI-double while Taylor Peacock threw a career high 6.1 innings to lead San José State softball (19-24, 6-10 MW) in a close 3-2 loss against Santa Clara (28–17, 7-2 WCC) in a midweek matchup from Santa Clara Softball Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Catcher Aneesa Almaguer sparked the Spartans' offense with a leadoff double in the second inning and later came around to score the game’s opening run. Shortstop Noriega added a key RBI double in the top of the seventh to tie the game for the Spartans and force a bottom of the seventh inning.
San José State matched Santa Clara hit-for-hit, tallying seven knocks, including a two-hit effort from McDowell. Haley Reeve delivered a clutch pinch-hit infield single in the top of the seventh to set up Noreiga’s game-tying RBI-double.
In the circle, Peacock threw 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out one. Despite taking the loss, Peacock kept the Spartans within striking distance throughout the game.
The Spartans return to Mountain West play this weekend as they host Boise State for their final homestand of the season.
