SAN JOSE, Calif. – Four different Spartans, Zach Chamizo, Jeriah Lewis, Zach Tallerman and Jake McCoy, homered to lead the San José State baseball team (22-23, 9-12 MW) in a 14-5 victory over Cal (18-27, 6-18 ACC) at Excite Ballpark on Wednesday evening in a lone midweek matchup.
The Spartans erupted for a seven run second inning and added six more in the fifth to put the game out of reach early. Designated hitter Chamizo sparked the charge, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. First baseman Tallerman followed suit with a 2-for-5 day that included a three-run homer to cap the second-inning outburst.
Lewis added power of his own with a two-run shot in the fifth and finished with two RBIs. Right fielder Alex Fernandes stayed hot at the plate, collecting three hits, driving in a run and scoring twice.
The offense was backed by a solid outing from starter Cade Cushing, who earned his first win of the season (1-2), tossing six innings and striking out one. Kyle Calzadiaz earned his first save of the year, striking out five over three scoreless innings of relief.
