Spartans Battle Back but Fall Against San Diego State

SAN DIEGO – Aubrie Thomas hit her sixth home run of the season and Aneesa Almaguer had a multi-hit performance to lead San José State softball (22-26, 9-12 MW) in a tough fought 4-3 loss against San Diego State (32–16, 15-6 MW) in game two of this regular season ending three game series from SDSU Softball Stadium on Friday night.

Outfielder Thomas led the Spartans at the plate, launching a solo home run in the fourth inning—her sixth of the season—and driving in two of the team’s three runs. Designated player Almaguer also tallied two hits, continuing her consistent presence in the lineup.

After falling behind 3–0 through three innings, the Spartans came to life in the middle frames. Thomas’ blast put SJSU on the board in the fourth, and the team capitalized on two Aztec errors in the fifth to plate two more and tie the game at 3–3.

Defensively, Lacie Ham started in the circle, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts. Taylor Peacock came in as relief in the sixth after San Diego State delivered a solo home run that proved to be the difference.

San Diego State was led by Shannon Cunningham’s bat and the relief effort of Cece Cellura, who earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings to close out the game.
