MESA, Ariz. – Alex Fernandes went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored to lead the No. 6 seed San José State baseball team (27-29, 13-17 MW) in a 7-3 loss to No. 2 seed Fresno State (29-27, 18-12 MW) at Sloan Park on Thursday night in the Spartans’ second game of the Mountain West Championships.
Despite a late push, the Spartans were unable to overcome an early deficit created by a three-run third inning from the Bulldogs. Rocco Caballero and Zach Chamizo drove in runs during a productive fifth inning that temporarily pulled the Spartans within one run. However, Fresno State tacked on insurance runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings.
Starter Win Scott (4-5) went the distance on the mound for SJSU, throwing 117 pitches over eight innings, allowing 10 hits, seven runs (four earned), and striking out five. Despite the loss, Scott showed grit by keeping the Bulldogs within reach during key middle innings
- Scott’s 8.0 innings pitched set a new career-high
- Fernandes has now recorded three or more hits in six games this season
- Caballero went 2-for-4 with two RBIs
- Chamizo extended his hit streak to 18 games and on base streak to 24 games
