Spartans Power Past Hawai‘i in Offensive Shootout, Presented by Habbas Law

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Walker Eget threw for 458 yards and two touchdowns, Danny Scudero recorded a career-high 215 yards and two touchdowns, Steve Chavez-Soto tallied a career-high three rushing touchdowns and Jordan Pollard notched a forced fumble, a sack, two tackles for a loss and eight tackles to lead the San José State football team (3-5, 2-2 MW) in a 45-38 victory over Hawai‘i (6-3, 3-2 MW) Saturday night from CEFCU Stadium, presented by Habbas Law in the Dick Tomey Legacy Game.

Eget connected on 20-of-40 passes, and also rushed for 25 yards. Scudero’s two touchdown receptions came on passes of 50 and 62 yards. In addition to Scudero, Kyri Shoels and Leland Smith also registered over 100 receiving yards.

On the ground, Chavez-Soto put up three touchdowns and 53 yards on 10 carries, while Lamar Radcliffe added a career-high 97 yards and his first rushing score of the season. The Spartans totaled 630 yards of offense, averaging 9.3 yards per play.

San José State’s offense exploded for 24 points in the second quarter, turning a 7–7 tie into a 31–14 halftime lead. After Hawai‘i rallied to close within three early in the fourth quarter, Chavez-Soto’s one-yard touchdown run with 5:37 remaining proved to be the game-sealer. 

  • The Spartans’ 630 yards are the most recorded in a Mountain West game since the Spartans put up 736 yards in their 62-52 victory over No. 16 Fresno State on Nov. 29, 2013
  • Scudero’s 215 receiving yards are the seventh most recorded by an SJSU receiver in program history and the fifth most recorded by any player in the NCAA this season
  • Scudero is also the first Spartan to put up over 200 receiving yards since Nick Nash notched 225 yards against Kennesaw State on Sept. 14, 2024
  • Scudero has gone over 100 yards in six out of eight games this season
  • The SJSU record for most games going over 100 receiving yards in a season is seven, held by Chandler Jones and Edell Shepherd
  • Scudero leads the country in receiving yards with 1,085, receiving yards per game with 135.6, and is second in the country and first in the MW with 10 receiving touchdowns
  • Scudero is also first in the MW and fourth in the country in receptions per game with 7.88
  • Eget’s 458 passing yards is the 14th most recorded by an SJSU quarterback in program history and the fourth most recorded by any player in the NCAA this season.
  • This is the second time this season Eget has thrown for over 450 yards, throwing for 473 yards against Stanford
  • Eget leads the nation with 325.9 passing yards per game
  • With no interceptions in the game, Eget extended his streak of consecutive passing attempts without an interception to 268, the third-longest streak in Mountain West history
  • Derek Carr holds the record for most consecutive pass attempts in MW history without an interception, with 305
  • This is the second game this season the Spartans have had three receivers record over 100 receiving yards. Before this season, the last time the Spartans had accomplished this feat was against No. 16 Fresno State on Nov. 29, 2013
  • Chavez-Soto is the first Spartan to rush for three touchdowns since Kairee Robinson did it against New Mexico on Oct. 14, 2023
  • Chavez Soto now has six touchdowns in his four games played this season
  • The Spartans scored 31 points in the first half, the most points scored in a half since they scored 38 in the second half against New Mexico on Oct. 14, 2023
  • Radcliffe’s 25-yard run in the first quarter was a career-long
  • With 113 receiving yards on the day, Smith now has three games going over 100 yards on the season, including in back-to-back games
  • This was also Shoels’ third game with over 100 receiving yards, totaling 109 yards in the game
  • The Spartans have the top passing offense in the country, averaging 331.5 yards per game
  • SJSU has the second-best total offense in the Mountain West, averaging 452.9 yards per game
  • Jaylen Thomas recovered his first career fumble
  • Pollard forced his first fumble of the season and the second of his career
  • Pollard now has 2.5 sacks on the season and has a sack in back-to-back games
  • The Spartans did not allow a sack in the game
  • The Spartans have only allowed eight sacks on the season, the fewest in the Mountain West
  • Mathias Brown made his first career field goal
  • Caleb Presley set a new career-high with six tackles and a tackle for loss
  • The Spartans have now won five straight Dick Tomey Legacy Games.
