Spartans Fall in 13-Inning Battle with San Francisco

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Kyle Calzadiaz, EJ McGrew and Tyler Albanese combined to pitch 21 strikeouts to lead the San José State baseball team (2-3, 0-0 MW) in a 7-6 13 inning loss to San Francisco (4-1, 0-0 WCC) Friday afternoon from Excite Ballpark. 

SJSU tallied 11 hits on the afternoon, highlighted by a three-hit performance from Peyton Rowles, who went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Alex Fernandes reached base four times, finishing 2-for-4 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored, while JC Osorio-Agard added two hits and a walk.

Trailing 5-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, SJSU rallied to send the game into extra-innings. With the bases loaded, Brent Cota delivered a two-run single down the right-field line to cut the deficit to one run. Later in the inning, Vincent Gamberdella added a sacrifice bunt RBI to even the score.

The teams traded zeros through the 10th, 11th and 12th innings. San Francisco pushed across two runs in the top of the 13th to take a 7-5 lead. The Spartans answered in the bottom half when Osorio-Agard walked and later scored on a Fernandes sacrifice fly. With the tying run on base, the Dons secured the final out to seal the 7-6 result.

On the mound, starter Calzadiaz worked five innings, allowing one run while striking out eight. In relief, McGrew struck out seven and allowed two earned runs across 3.2 innings. Albanese delivered three scoreless innings and struck out six to keep the Spartans in position late.
