SAN FRANCISCO – Alex Fernandes finished 1-for-4 with a double, RBI, walk and stolen base and Peyton Rowles recorded a pair of hits and drove in a run to lead the San José State baseball team (3-4, 0-0 MW) in a 9-3 loss to San Francisco (5-2, 0-0 WCC) Sunday afternoon in the final game the three game series from Benedetti Diamond.
After four scoreless innings on both sides, the Spartans broke through in the top of the fifth. Catcher Matteo Mendoza drew a leadoff walk before Drew Giannini laced a double to right field to put runners at second and third. Rocco Caballero brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly, and Fernandes followed with an RBI double to give San José State a 2-0 lead.
San Francisco responded with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control. The Dons added three more runs in the eighth, highlighted by a three-run home run, to extend the lead to 9-3.
The Spartans added their final run in the seventh inning. Fernandes reached on a walk, stole second and moved to third on an error before Rowles delivered an RBI single to right field. As a team, San Jose State went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
On the mound, starter Dylan Smith (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs over four innings of work.
