Noriega Leads Spartans in Day Two of Capital Classic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Ahmiya Noriega led the way for the Spartans, slugging five hits on the day for the San José State softball team in an 8-4 loss to Sacred Heart (2-5, 0-0 MAAC) and a 6-1 loss to Sacramento State (15-3, 0-0 Big Sky) in the second day of the Capital Classic at Shea Stadium. 

Game 1: Sacred Heart 8, San José State 4

After falling behind 7-0, San José State found its rhythm in the fourth inning, plating three runs, followed by another run in the fifth. Taylor Chillingworth had a productive day at the plate, driving in three runs. Reína Zermeno contributed an RBI via a sacrifice fly, while Kaylani Lim notched a double in the effort.

In the circle, Delaney Faus provided a bright spot in relief, throwing two scoreless innings and allowing only one hit to keep the Pioneers' bats quiet in the closing frames

Game 2: Sacramento State 6, San José State 1

The Spartans fell to the Hornets in the afternoon finale. San José State's lone run came in the third inning, momentarily cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Noriega sparked the offense with a hit to score a run, while Chillingworth and Carly Cummings accounted for the team's remaining hits

Norah Coulsell shouldered the bulk of the work in the circle, striking out two over 4.2 innings. Faus again looked sharp in relief, finishing the game with 1.1 innings of scoreless work.

  • Faus excelled in relief across both games, totaling 3.1 innings of scoreless softball.
  • Chillingworth remained a consistent threat, tallying 3 RBI on the day.
