Spartans Fall to Saint Mary’s in Series Finale

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Dylan Jackson hit a two-run home run to lead the San José State baseball team (4-7, 0-0 MW) in a 13-4 loss to Saint Mary’s (7-4, 0-0 WCC) in the final game of the four game series Sunday afternoon from Excite Ballpark. The Gaels took the series 3-1.

The Gaels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, the Spartans chipped away at the deficit in the third when Peyton Rowles doubled and was driven home by an Alex Fernandes single to left field.

The Spartans were able to tie the game in the fifth inning. Rocco Caballero sparked the rally with a double down the left-field line and was brought home by an RBI double from Jake McCoy, making the score 2-2.

In the top of the sixth. Saint Mary’s was able to plate seven runs on five hits, highlighted by a three-run home run.

The Spartans were able to cut into the deficit thanks to Jackson’s two-run blast to left-center field, making it a 9-4 ballgame. However, the Spartans were unable to further close the gap as the Gaels added four more runs in the ninth to seal the game.

On the mound, EJ McGrew took the loss, allowing five runs across 1.1 innings in relief. Dylan Smith started the game, tossing four strikeouts and allowing two runs in 4.0 innings pitched.

  • Jackson’s home run was the first of his career
  • McCoy went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI
  • Caballero and Alan Ramirez both went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored
  • Fernandes’ on base streak improved to 11 games
