Spartans to Host UNLV to Open Conference Play

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State softball team (8-15, 0-0 MW) will open up Mountain West play by hosting UNLV (12-13, 0-0 MW) with a three-game series this weekend at the Spartan Softball Field. 

First pitches will be scheduled for Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at noon. The first two games can be watched on Mountain West Network and the third will be featured on NBC Bay Area. 

Sunday's game will be Mental Health Awareness Day.

  • The Spartans first opened the season 1-10, but in the last 13, they have gone 7-6, coming off two wins over Saint Mary's
  • UNLV and SJSU faced off twice last season and split the series 1-1. UNLV took the first game 2-1 in nine innings, SJSU took the second, 4-3
  • Taylor Chillingworth and Reina Zermeno are both tied for first in the MW with triples, the pair hitting two three-baggers
  • Chillingworth has also gotten hit by three pitches this year and is tied for third in the MW
  • Carly Cummings has currently drawn 10 walks thus far into the season and she is ninth in the conference. She is also tied for first in the MW to lay down the most sacrifice bunts
  • Ava Conti currently holds a 1.75 Earned Run Average, putting her at seventh in the MW
  • Ahmiya Noriega was selected to the 2026 Mountain West Preseason Team. Noriega led the nation in triples last season with 10 while having a .352 avg, 26 hits and two homeruns
  • Noriega sits in ninth in the MW in batting average with a .377 average. She is also tenth in the MW for OBP at .450
