Rowles Walks it Off Again in Spartans' Win Over New Mexico

SAN JOSE, Calif. –  For the second game in a row, Peyton Rowles walked it off, this time with an RBI double to left field in the bottom of the tenth to lead the San José State baseball team (6-11, 1-0 MW) in a 1-0 victory over New Mexico (12-6, 0-1 MW) Friday night from Excite Ballpark in the first game of a three game series.

After nine scoreless innings in a tightly played pitchers’ duel, the Spartans finally broke through in the bottom of the 10th. With two outs, Alex Fernandes lined a single to right to keep the inning alive before Rowles delivered the game-winning hit — a double to left-center that scored Fernandes and lifted San José State to the victory.

The Spartans’ pitching staff set the tone throughout the night. David Thomas started and worked six shutout innings, allowing six hits while striking out five. Out of the bullpen, EJ McGrew (1-1) earned the win, tossing four scoreless frames with four strikeouts.

New Mexico threatened multiple times but could not capitalize, leaving 11 runners on base despite collecting nine hits. Offensively, Fernandes led the way for the Spartans with a 2-for-3 night and two walks, while Rowles drove in the game’s only run with his extra-inning double. San José State finished with six hits on the evening.

  • This marked the Spartans’ first shutout over New Mexico since March 6, 1999
  • This is the Spartans’ third shutout of the season
  • Rowles now has a hit in four straight games with five RBIs in that span
  • Fernandes improved his hit streak to eight games and his on base streak to 17 games, every game this season

UP NEXT: The Spartans will face New Mexico tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. at Excite Ballpark for the second game of the series. The game can be watched on Mountain West Network.
