Klein’s Walk-Off Lifts Spartans Past Aztecs in 10-Inning Battle

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Rohne Klein walked it off with an RBI single in the 10th in his lone at bat to lead the San José State baseball team (10-12, 2-1 MW) in a 9-8 victory over San Diego State (12-12, 2-1 MW) Saturday night from Excite Ballpark. 

San Jose State wasted no time setting the tone offensively. After San Diego State jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the first, the Spartans answered immediately with three of their own, highlighted by RBI hits from Jake McCoy and JC Osorio-Agard along with a sacrifice fly from Alan Ramirez. They continued to apply pressure in the second and third innings, building a 6–3 lead behind RBIs from Osorio-Agard, Matteo Mendoza and Peyton Rowles.

SDSU scored a run in the sixth, but San José State broke through again in the eighth inning, tacking on two more insurance runs. Fernandes sparked the rally with a bunt single, and McCoy followed with an RBI base hit to extend the lead. Osorio-Agard delivered once more with an RBI double down the left-field line, pushing the Spartans in front 8–4.

In the ninth, San Diego State capitalized on free passes and hit batters, stringing together a four-run rally despite recording just two hits in the frame. A sacrifice fly, a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, wild pitch and a walk forced in runs as the Aztecs erased the deficit and tied the game at 8–8, sending it to extra innings.

After holding the Aztecs scoreless in the top of the 10th, In the bottom half, a leadoff walk by Brent Cota and a well-executed sacrifice bunt from Rocco Caballero moved the winning run into scoring position before Klein delivered the decisive RBI single to right, capping the 9–8 victory.

Osorio-Agard led the offensive charge, finishing with two doubles and three RBIs, while McCoy added two hits and two RBIs. Alex Fernandes was a catalyst all afternoon, reaching base four times and scoring three runs.

On the mound, the Spartans Luka Pintar went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs. EJ McGrew struckout two and did not give up a run or hit in 2.1 innings of work. Peter Herrick (1-0) received the win, his first of the year, holding the Aztecs scoreless in 1.1 innings pitched to close out the game.
