Spartans Explode for 18 Runs in Dominant Win Over Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –  Brent Cota went 3-for-4, recording a career-high five RBIs and hit a home run to lead the San José State baseball team (11-13, 2-1 MW) in a 18-6 victory over Santa Clara (9-14, 0-3 WCC) Tuesday night from Stephen Schott Stadium.

The Spartans erupted for 16 hits and scored in six of seven innings, setting the tone early with a six-run first inning and never looking back.

Jake McCoy added four runs scored and a two-run homer, while Rohne Klein drove in four runs, including a first-inning blast that helped ignite the early surge.

The Spartans continued to apply pressure in the third inning, plating five more runs behind timely hitting, including a three-run homer from Peyton Rowles. San José State finished 9-for-14 with runners in scoring position, capitalizing on nearly every opportunity.

On the mound, Luca Staiano (1-1) earned the win, pitching two innings. Cade Cushing bridged the middle frames before Peter Herrick shut the door with 4.1 scoreless innings to secure his first save of the season.

Santa Clara kept pace early, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings, but the Spartans’ bullpen silenced the Broncos over the final four frames.

The game would be called after the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.
