LAS VEGAS – Alex Fernandes hit a two-run home run to lead the San José State baseball team (11-15, 2-3 MW) in a 15-8 loss to UNLV (17-10, 2-3 MW) Saturday night from Earl E. Wilson Stadium in the second game of a three game series.
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 2–0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a double from Jake McCoy and two runs scoring on wild pitches. UNLV responded in the third inning, erupting for five runs on a series of extra-base hits, including back-to-back RBI doubles that flipped the game in the Rebels’ favor.
The Spartans chipped away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before delivering their biggest punch in the eighth. Fernandes highlighted the rally with his two-run home run to deep right field, part of a four-run inning that tied the game.

UNLV plated seven runs in the eighth inning, four which came off walks with the bases loaded, to put the game out of reach. The Spartans recorded 12 hits on the day, but struck out 17 times and went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
From the mound, Peter Herrick received the loss to put him at 1-1 on the season. The Spartans struck out 10 batters with Kyle Calzadiaz leading the way with five. Luka Pintar started the game, allowing five runs across 2.1 innings.

- Fernandes notched his fifth multi-RBI game of the season
- Fernandes’ home run was his team leading fourth of the season and the ninth of his career
- Fernandes has reached base safely in all 26 games this season
