Spartans Drop Series Opener to Pitt

SAN JOSE, Calif. –  Alex Fernandes went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead the San José State baseball team (4-9, 0-0 MW) in a 20-1 loss in seven innings to Pitt (10-3, 0-0 ACC) in the first game of a three game series Friday afternoon from Excite Ballpark.

The Panthers struck early, plating eight runs in the first inning and adding eight more in the third to build a commanding lead. Pitt finished with 20 runs on 17 hits in the contest.

San José State was limited to three hits on the afternoon. Jake McCoy drove in the Spartans’ lone run with an RBI single in the fourth inning, scoring Fernandes after his leadoff double.

On the mound, Kyle Calzadiaz (1-2) took the loss for the Spartans.The Spartans’ bullpen combined for 6.1 innings of relief, highlighted by Spencer Kratt, who tossed 3.0 innings

  • The Spartans threw nine total strikeouts in the game, led by Kratt who tallied three
  • Cade Cushing, Landon Marchetti and Kyler Bacosa also pitched in the game
  • Fernandes has extended his on base streak to 13 games, every game so far this season
